Sandwiched between two lakes, the capitol building rises up as the star of Madison, Wisconsin. Easily the most impressive structure in the city, it decorates the Madison skyline and features colorful glass mosaics, stately halls, and gold leaf ceilings. It was built from pieces of stone from all over the world and is topped by the state animal, a badger, which sits perched on top of the building as it keeps watch over the city.
A tour of the impressive capitol building would not be complete without a stop on State Street. Beginning at the capitol, this historic walkway connects the heart of the city with its brain, the University of Wisconsin. Along the way are charming boutiques, ethnic restaurants, and bars of every type. The highlight of any night on State Street though, is of course the people watching.
Key cultural landmarks in the area include the Wisconsin Historical Museum and the Madison Museum of Contemporary Art. Once a year, the Madison Children’s Museum hosts Adult Swim night, featuring finger painting, giant block building, and a cash bar. The Overture Center has featured everything from Cirque de Soleil shows to Broadway hits. Across from the capitol building is Monona Terrace, a convention center designed by Wisconsin native Frank Lloyd Wright that sits on top of the lake.
